What we test

This test measures the two most important hormones for assessing thyroid function: TSH and Free T4. These biomarkers help diagnose hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), conditions that affect millions of people worldwide.

TSH is produced by the pituitary gland in your brain and acts as the body's thermostat for thyroid hormone production. When thyroid hormone levels are low, TSH increases to stimulate the thyroid gland to produce more hormones.

High TSH levels typically indicate hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), where the pituitary gland is working hard to stimulate a sluggish thyroid gland.

Low TSH levels usually suggest hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), where the thyroid is producing too much hormone and the pituitary gland reduces TSH production.

TSH is the most sensitive marker for detecting thyroid dysfunction and is often the first test doctors use to screen for thyroid problems.

Free T4 measures the amount of unbound thyroxine hormone in your blood that's immediately available for your body to use. This is the active portion of the T4 hormone that can enter cells and regulate metabolism.

T4 is the main hormone produced by the thyroid gland and plays a crucial role in controlling metabolism, energy levels, heart rate, body temperature, and growth.

Low Free T4 levels combined with high TSH confirm hypothyroidism, while high Free T4 with low TSH indicates hyperthyroidism.

Free T4 provides direct evidence of thyroid gland function and helps doctors determine the severity of thyroid disorders and monitor treatment effectiveness.
